Ellen Tauscher for Congress

Tauscher Policy: National Security

Protecting the United States begins with smart policies that address threats before they reach our shores. I have supported tough anti-terrorism programs including programs to cooperate with other countries to track terrorists, eliminate their sources of funding, and keep nuclear material and biological and chemical weapons out of hands of terrorists. That is why I also drafted a section of the Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, creating a lead official in the White House responsible for coordinating the fight against weapons of mass destruction.

As a subcommittee Chair on the Armed Services Committee, I am committed to investing in the capabilities that will protect our country and provide our men and women in uniform with the best training and equipment to meet evolving threats and missions. I have worked hard to give our military sufficient time to rest and train, and provide the proper benefits and care to our soldiers.

I strongly believe in a foreign policy that makes use of our strengths - diplomatic, economic, cultural and military - and works in partnership with our allies to solve global problems.

Our national security also depends on the programs and policies we have right here at home. That is why I have supported deployment of technologies to inspect the cargo that enters our ports. I have worked hard to secure increased funding for homeland security grants that protect our communities. And I am committed to equipping our first responders and empower local communities to prepare them for possible attacks and natural disasters.
