Ellen Tauscher for Congress

Tauscher Policy: Healthcare

Ensuring that every American, every Californian, has access to quality affordable health care is one of the most important duties I have in Congress.

There is much work to be done. The United States currently spends 15 percent of our gross domestic product (GDP) on health care while 47 million Americans lack access to health insurance, of which nearly 7 million live right here in California. Health care costs continue to spiral out of control threatening working and middle income families who can barely afford coverage today.

I believe in covering all uninsured children through the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), in making sure the Medicare safety net is providing access to quality care for our seniors, and in helping small businesses provide health insurance to their workers. At the same time, I am working on solutions to bring down the cost of health care – like encouraging more preventive care and chronic disease management, and implementing comprehensive electronic medical record systems.
