Ellen Tauscher for Congress

Tauscher Policy: Energy and the Environment

Californians have long been at the forefront of protecting our environment and developing renewable clean energy. The Bay Area itself is home to some of the most advanced research in the world, both in the private and public sectors, into new fuel cell technology, renewable energy production and conservation.

Climate change has already had measurable impacts on our environment and will continue to do so unless we dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help fight climate change, I strongly support funding in the research and development of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geo-thermal, and bio-fuels.

Protecting our environment also means maintaining critical endangered species habitat and preserving the health of the Delta. We must work together to reverse the decline of fish populations in the Delta and restore balance to California’s water supply.

Also in Congress I have:
  • Led the fight in the House against a measure to exempt the Defense Department from provisions of the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
  • Fought water diversion legislation that would have reduced water quality and quantity to area residents.
  • Introduced a bill to reauthorize the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund of the Clean Water Act.
  • Been an original co-sponsor of the Community Revitalization and Brownfield Cleanup Act.
  • Restored funding for important groundwater cleanup work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
  • Secured funding for the Alameda County Agricultural Enhancement and Open Space Plan that will balance open space, wildlife habitat and agricultural viability.
